2011 Caulfield Guineas Prelude Results – Helmet Wins for Punters

September 26th, 2011

Clear Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2011 favourite Helmet claimed a commanding victory, saluting in the key $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) lead-up in a win for the punters at Caulfield on Saturday.

Having already won at elite level twice as a two-year-old, the Peter Snowden-trained colt Helmet staked their claims to add a third Group 1 win in next month’s 2011 Caulfield Guineas after taking out the Prelude on the weekend, subsequently snaring top spot in the futures odds for the Guineas at Luxbet from fellow boom three-year-old Smart Missile.

Known for his wayward racing antics, Helmet looked a much improved galloper on Saturday from their last-start third in the Golden Rose, and didn’t put a hoof wrong.

Settling beautifully into second on the outside of early leader Golden Archer, Helmet ($2.60F) hit the turbo when asked by jockey Kerrin McEvoy on the straight and burst into the lead to win the Prelude by three and a quarter lengths ahead of the Mick Price-trained Secret Hills ($18) in a time of 1.21.40, just 0.2 seconds outside of the track record held by their sire Exceed And Excel.

Finishing off the Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2011 trifecta was Anthony Freedman’s stakes winning Nadeem colt Specter ($14) a further three lengths back who narrowly nudged out the Danny O’Brien-trained Running Tall ($51) from the top three.

Helmet has now won five of their eight career starts, placing third in the remaining three, to earn $895,550 in prize money.

Punters can back them right now to add to that impressive record with a Win or Place in the Caulfield Guineas 2011 on October 8 at Luxbet.

After their weekend win, Helmet is the $3.40 Caulfield Guineas favourite ahead of beaten Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes favourite Smart Missile at $3.80.

They have also firmed into the equal $10 third favourite in the 2011 Cox Plate betting at Luxbet trailing only spruik Kiwi galloper Jimmy Choux ($7) and Mark Kavanagh’s genuine weight-for-age performer Whobegotyou ($8).
