The 2011 Thousand Guineas Prelude threw up one of the upsets of the day in a race that was packed full of drama and mayhem almost form the outset.
It was billed as a race between Hallowell Belle, Celebrity Girl and Mosheen and while they were all their at the finish none of them walked away with the win.
From the jump there was a steady pace set out in front with the favourite Hallowell Belle settling in a perfect spot on the rails from barrier four.
Celebrity Girl was similarly suited from gate two and Mosheen didn’t have too many excuses form gate seven either.
As they swung for home though things started to turn ugly as Hallowell belle found herself boxed in somewhat as they balanced up.
Jockey Ben Melham panicked and drove the horse wide and crashed into a runner on his outside.
He then swung back and forth near the rail before eventually working his way up the inside with a run.
The horse took it and flew to the line but the early poor ride meant she was robbed of an almost certain victory.
There were two horses in front of her in the photo, Celebrity Girl and the outsider Bliss Street.
They couldn’t be separated by the judge and it was declared a dead heat.
That’s not how it stayed though with Danny Nikolic on the fourth placed Mosheen (only a head back in the photo) launching a protest against Celebrity Girl.
That was upheld gifting the win to Bliss Street with Hallowell Belle in second and Mosheen elevated to third.
It was certainly one hectic race and punters at Luxbet no doubt had their hearts in their mouths.
If they were winners though it would have all been worth it with Bliss Street paying a very tidy sum upwards of $20 at Australia’s leading online bookmaker!
